Hypocrisy is Alive and Well

Checking first that Libya and Saudi Arabia will make up the shortfall the EU is expected to increase the sanctions on Iran which is reasonably suspected of developing nuclear weapons, by putting an embargo on Iran’s oil exports.

What bloody hypocrisy! The Nuclear non Proliferation Pact, of which Iran is a signatory, agreed that the nuclear weapon holding countries would not use them against non nuclear countries and would, over time, reduce and eventually eliminate these horrors of mass destruction. Well they have reduced the numbers but vastly increased the power and accuracy of nuclear weapons. In addition, Israel, with their friend the USA turning a blind eye have acquired NW’s and defy over 150 UN resolutions without any sanction at all. Israel has attacked Iran in the past albeit with conventional targeted weapons.

Is it any wonder that Iran now seems Hell bent on acquiring NWs as defence against such a belligerent near neighbour and it’s friend across the Atlantic backing Israel openly and covertly.

Today the ‘Nuclear Clock’ went forward one minute. See http://www.thebulletin.org/content/media-center/announcements/2012/01/10/doomsday-clock-moves-1-minute-closer-to-midnight

Nuclear Progress?

President Obama of the USA and President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia have signed an agreement to reduce their respective stock of nuclear weapons. This is of course to be welcomed and it’s a START (Strategic Arms Reduction Talks) However, let’s not get too carried away. Currently they have well over 2000 nuclear bombs each and they have now agreed to reduce the numbers to over 1500 each; progress, yes but still sufficient to destroy the entire globe.

The time must be right for the UK to contribute by not replacing Trident which has never been ‘independant’ anyway while at the same time saving us a massive £70 billion that we can certainly do with in the present economic climate.

No to Trident

Nuclear Weapons Sell Off

Without it even being announced in Parliament let alone debated there, the government has sold it’s remaining 1/3 share in the Atomic Weapons  Establishment to Jacobs Engineering, a US company.

US companies now control 2/3rds of AWE and any last remaining myth that our nuclear weapons are independent have disappeared into thin air along with £billions of our money to America.

AWE is currently undergoing the biggest investment programme in recent decades with operators boasting it to be ‘on the scale of Heathrow Terminal 5’. Spending on capital programmes, over and above routine running-costs has mushroomed from £24m in 2000 to £420m last year.

If you ever wonder what happens to your taxes or why there isn’t enough cash for decent pensions or repairs to your local school and so on, then look no further than the billions wasted on nuclear weapons and their means of delivery. There are no circumstances in which we would use them because to do so would likely bring about our own demise so why do they waste 100’s of £billions of our hard earned money on them? We must demand an end to these toys for the boys.

Nuclear Hypocrisy

North Korea has exploded two nuclear weapons underground as tests along with firing short range missiles. The UN and major countries around the globe have condemned the Korean leadership for it’s actions.

Way back in 1968 the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty was opened for signatures in which the then nuclear powers, Britain, USA, Soviet Union, China and France agreed never to attack a non nuclear country with nuclear bombs and also to reduce and eventually eliminate their own nuclear weapons.

The original five nations have consistently failed to keep their side of the agreement and have increased their capability and accuracy. They have ‘turned a blind eye’ to perceived friendly countries acquiring their own nuclear weapons such as Israel, Pakistan, India and South Africa. In the face of such hypocrisy how on Earth can they be surprised and outraged when nations such as Iran and North Korea set about building a nuclear arsenal?

Public Anger

The public are rightly outraged and angry over the subject of MP’s expenses and perhaps we could do with some more anger.

If only the public would show more anger then perhaps we might get some worthwhile changes. Like anger over our young soldiers dying in a futile invasion of Afghanistan; like wasting billions on nuclear weapons, submarines and aircraft carriers; like billions more on ID cards and intercepting all our ‘phone calls and emails. Like refusing to allow the imposition of Unitary Authorities when the people, on the rare occasions they have even been asked, give a resounding no. Let’s get angry about the unaccountable House of Lords and yes, let’s get angry about that bastion of anti-democracy, the Royal family.

If this current anger over expenses helps to make voters take note of politics and realise that power really does lie with the people but that we have to fight to keep it, every inch of the way, or risk losing it altogether, then it will turn out to have been a good thing.

Can’t They See?

Gordon Brown, trotting along behind the latest US President, will today make yet another warning to Iran about it’s nuclear programme and threatening even more sanctions if it goes ahead with suspected nuclear weapon manufacture.

Iran is a signatory to the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty which means that it agrees not to produce weapons and is subject to inspection and ALSO that the nuclear powers promise not to use nuclear weapons against them AND to progressively reduce their weapon stocks eventually to zero.

Pakistan and India, South Africa too probably, defy this arrangement with no comment from the West. Israel however, never signed the agreement and is reckoned to hold between 75 – 200 nuclear warheads and is therefore exempt from inspection. No sanctions on Israel with any suggestion in the UN being  blocked by the US.

Can’t the West see just how unfair and unjust they are being and make appropriate changes to their policies?
