Jade Goody Grand Slam

The death of Jade Goody is front page news and is even the lead item on the BBC web site today. Of course I’m sorry that a mother has died of cancer at a very young age and I am pleased that she raised awareness of cervical cancer resulting in many young women going for tests which may save lives.

_45589930_goodyb282_bbcJust pause for a moment though. Just why has she such a high profile? To be honest I had to do a little easy research to find out, as she has been nothing but an irritating news link for a very long time. Apparently Jade shot to fame and yes, fortune, by being a contestant on ‘Big Brother’ a ridiculous voyeuristic TV programme. Yes, I have seen it, or at least about ten minutes of it before changing channel. Her claim to fame was her almost complete lack of general knowledge and that’s it! Exhibiting a failed education and making a virtue out of ignorance, millions apparently made her into a celebrity. What the hell does that say about the kind of society that we live in?

In the same weekend that Jade died, Ireland won the Five Nations Championship with a Grand Slam for the first time since 1948. Ireland, in the case of Rugby, means all of Ireland, north and south working together. images2Particularly given the recent murders in Northern Ireland threatening the long awaited but still fragile peace building process, this amazing event should surely have been news item number one rather than pushed well down the news rankings.

Support This Mother & Her Daughters

A Nigerian mother, Pamela Izevbekhai, who escaped from Nigeria with her two young daughters to Eire is fighting deportation. Although her husband who is still in Nigeria, supports her, his family want to seize the girls and perform ritual female genital mutilation (FGM). In other words the girl is held down and her clitoris and probably her labia cut off with a razor blade. Her first daughter had this barbaric act done to her and bled to death. No wonder then that this mother took her other daughters and fled seeking sanctuary. The following video says more than I ever can.

If you would like to support Pamela Izevbekhai then this link will show you how. Although FGM is illegal in the UK and other ‘civilised’ countries it’s worth pointing out that mutilating boys through circumcision is STILL lawful in the UK!

Ireland’s Vote for Democracy

Eire Flag Although all the votes have not yet been counted as I write, it seems certain that the people of Eire have given a ‘NO’ to the EU Treaty. This treaty is all but the same as the proposed Constitution rejected in a vote by France and Holland and on which we in the UK were promised a vote and were then denied.

In many ways I am in favour of the EU, on economic and social co-operation, free trade, unrestricted travel between member states and a more effective combined voice on such matters as Global warming and the environment. Together we are a powerful force in combating human rights abuses and in providing aid when needed in the developing world.

The one big drawback for me is that the EU is in no way democratic. It is argued that I can vote for my MEP and it’s true, I can indeed vote for a representative who has a high salary but virtually no power. Real decisions are taken by the Council of Ministers. I think it was Tony Benn who said something like “I can’t support anyone who I can’t vote out” and that is the trouble with the EU, we can’t vote out those with the power. I am also opposed to Europe increasing it’s military expenditure which is included in the amended treaty.

The Irish have written into their constitution that no major changes can take place without the consent of the people and it is that enshrined piece of democracy that has saved the people of Europe from having this, all but in name, Constitution forced upon them.

Three cheers and a pint of Guinness for every Irish NO voter I say.
