Stephen Byers A Different Angle

There is justifiable outrage at the antics of Stephen Byers, Patricia Hewitt and Geoff Hoon apparently offering their services to lobby groups in order to further feather their own nests. Cynic that I am of course, I wasn’t in the least surprised which goes to show how low politicians have sunk in my estimation. However, that’s another matter.

What struck me though was the expected going rate for this ‘service’. Three to five thousand Pounds per day for advice and I use that word advisedly.  Now that is around ten times more than the average worker gets for a whole week never mind for just a few hours in a day. It just goes to show what a rarified atmosphere these people live in and is symptomatic of the greed that has helped to bring our country to parlous state that it is today.

Duke of Hypocrisy – sorry, York

You may not read The Telegraph very often but do read this article for a big laugh before you choke on an upwelling of outrage.

The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, had the gall to say that he was taken aback at MP’s expenses and this from a guy who last year spent £4,000 of our money on a 146 mile helicopter trip. The mind boggles.

Snouts, Troughs & Sadness

There are enough commentators wearing down their fingers on keyboards over the current disgraceful revelations of MP’s without me having to join in. What saddens me most I think, is the unwillingness of any of them to resign now that their greed has been brought into the light of day.

I’m old enough to remember a time when ministers for example, took full responsibility for what happened on their watch even if they had no knowledge at the time. They recognised that they should have known or should have put in place systems of prevention and were honourable enough to see that the ‘buck stopped with them.’ Now they spin and excuse themselves as with the present snouts in trough scandle. This is the sadness for me; greed seems to have won over honour.

A Sign of The Times

On a slightly lighter note amidst all the gloom and doom.

A motor cruiser named ‘Mr Greedy’ got into trouble and ended up on the rocks in the Channel Islands, which of course are well known tax havens for bankers, financiers and those not willing to pay their proper contribution to society. See.
