Migrants – Asylum Seekers – Some Thoughts

You would have to be a machine or completely heartless not to be moved by the photo of the drowned little boy, Aylan, lying on a beach and a couple of people have asked me what I think about the horrendous situation taking place in the Middle East and in Europe.

Aylan Petitions are springing up like daisies asking Cameron and the Government to open our borders and take in thousands of these unfortunate people. So far, although being a weak prime minister he will probably do a U turn, Cameron is resisting and spouting on about how our Navy is in the Mediterranean to save people from the sea and how our foreign aid is helping in the middle east and north Africa. Quite true of course but picking people up and dumping them in Italy doesn’t seem at all neighbourly.

It’s perfectly natural, if you’re anything like a decent human being, to want to take them all in, to provide the means of a life free from fear of death, mutilation or rape, to build a life in a reasonably democratic country like ours (UK). It is, though, I feel, also essential for not only any refugees that we take in but for ourselves and the future of our nation that we stand back a little and consider the implications before we act in haste only to regret later.

Many of the people pouring into Europe are not refugees or asylum seekers but economic migrants seeking employment such as those risking life or limb climbing under lorries at Calais and this is understandable. The UK already has huge numbers of non EU immigrants from the Middle East, Africa and the Indian Sub-continent. Many have integrated, built businesses and contribute to the economic wealth of the nation; many have not.

Differing cultures add to and benefit us all add to our enjoyment and increase understanding between peoples but only up to a point, a tipping point. There are towns here already that are culturally non British, where the once indigenous Briton now feels uncomfortable at best or unwelcome to say the least. Mosques are springing up replacing the Christian based communities. Admittedly I’m an atheist and would like a fully secular society but in the meantime I would like to hear church bells not an Imam crying out a call to prayer from a minaret.

The distressing scenes being played out emanating from Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and Libya are in part at least caused by Blair, Bush and Cameron and so we do bear most of the blame and with it some responsibility for the result. There has been a suggestion that each council in the land could take in one refugee family which would mean 10,000 asylum seekers allowed in and I think this would be a good and fair idea particularly as being spread out they would hopefully integrate rather than grouping together and forming little enclaves of their past. I feel this is the maximum we could assimilate particularly as immigration seems to be almost out of control with over a quarter of a million being added to our population each year.

As well as this Europe (EU) needs to get a grip and provide refugee centres in the inwardly affected countries then send back without delay any economic migrants. The UN and EU countries must pressure the middle eastern governments to take in these desperate people, after all they have similar religions and way of life as well as climate. It should be remembered that the UK is more crowded than India. The USA has vast areas of land so why should it too not take in refugees given that it bears huge responsibility for much of the mess in this world?

Britain at Risk

Details from the 2011 Census have just come out making for interesting reading. The population of England & Wales is now 56 million of which 7 million+ were born outside the UK making White British just 80% of the population and indeed London now has only 45% White British.

Now those figures are, to me, concerning enough but let us add to that the British born children of those originating from outside the UK plus the countless numbers (hence no stats) of illegal immigrants and those who did not fill in the forms at all. The rapid dilution of the indigenous British puts at severe risk our very culture and accepted way of life.

I am no isolationist but I believe we are a unique and special group of Nations and islands and so also believe the time has come to say enough.

Opening Ceremony

So, the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games is to feature the British Countryside and ‘Shakespeare’! A countryside that vast numbers of our population never see as they can’t afford to visit it let alone explore it. A countryside where small farmers struggle to exist while the supermarkets make a fortune from selling their produce. A countryside where huge investment companies and the agro/chemical companies create vast fields devoid of wild life as they cut down the ancient hedgerows to make space for their efficient machines.

Secondly “All hail Shakespeare” as part of the theme! Let’s be honest most people haven’t heard of Shakespeare and couldn’t give a stuff; at best he might have been something to endure for a brief period at school during English Literature lessons. Yes he was a brilliant play write 100’s of years ago but totally irrelevant and incomprehensible to most of us. Anyone would think we haven’t produced another brilliant writer since then. God alone knows how much it cost but the organisers have commissioned the casting of a bell for the ceremony that is twice the weight of Big Ben and inscribed with a phrase from The Tempest “ “Be not afeard, the isle is full of noises”! FFS! The rest of the World will think we are stuck in the past which of course we are, at least, those who tend to rise to the top of the pile are.

Badgers Saved from Slaughter

A fascinating and beautiful animal that has long been a part of the British countryside and the subject of many a children’s book has been saved.

Known to be a carrier of Bovine T.B. but with no definitive evidence that they are responsible for passing it to cattle, farmers have campaigned for their extermination. Scientific studies have shown that even a total cull (euphamism for killing every badger.) would have only a slight effect on cattle infections. It should be noted that other creatures also carry bovine T.B. such as voles.

Hillary Benn the Environment Secretary will announce on Monday that a mass slaughter will not now take place and that other ways to control the spread of Bovine T.B. will be investigated. Three cheers for common sense from this Government for a change.

Update. Friday 4-7-08 pm. Farmer’s Union says it will fight in the Courts to overturn the ruling.

A Principled MP?

I never would even have dreamed that one day I would leap to my feet and applaud a Conservative MP, let alone David Davis, the Shadow Home Secretary, for defending Rights and Freedom. I do so now!

His resignation of his seat only to fight in the resultant Bi-Election on the single issue of the 42 days detention without charge, does seem to me a little bizzare but the reasoning may become more clear over time. New Labour has clearly lost it’s way by being the architect of a controlled and surveillance society with diminishing rights. These hard won rights and freedom are what have characterised what it is to be British. The terrorists are now winning without bombs, without guns or even threats, our unique nationhood and way of life is being changed for ever. We MUST support anyone who stands against those who would destroy our unique way of life, be they terrorists or even our own Government.
