Amendments proposed by Ed Balls to the Children, Schools and Families Bill will allow ‘faith’ schools to more or less opt out of the requirements on sex education that will apply to all the State schools.
These schools will have to teach children aged seven to 11 about relationships including marriage, same sex and civil partnerships, divorce and separation and Secondary school students are to learn about sexual activity, reproduction, contraception and same sex relationships. So far so good but there is a but, a very large but. The teachers in these schools can then go on to say for example, that in our religion using condoms is wrong and sinful and we ban their use. They can say that homosexual relationships are an abomination to God and that in some parts of the world where our religion is practiced they are killed for it. It doesn’t take a genius to see where this could lead.
I guess in a democracy it would be virtually impossible to ban faith schools but there is no reason that they should be funded by the state. It is time, surely, that state funding should be withdrawn and those that want to educate their children in weird beliefs should pay for this dubious privilege.
I recently wrote about the BBC not reporting the 24hr blockade of Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Research Establishment and today they are not reporting on a blockade of Sizewell nuclear power station in protest at the government’s flawed report approving more nuclear power stations.
This is very disturbing indeed as the BBC is (was?) one of the very few sources of infomation that could be trusted. I and I suspect others, will be demanding an explanation from the BBC and I’ll post any response when received.
If you have any doubts about nuclear power then I urge you to watch this documentary The Battle for Chenobyl. If you think it couldn’t happen here then just remember the radiation leak from Windscale, now called Sellafield, that wafted over Liverpool and Manchester without a warning to the population, or Three Mile Island in the USA.
Update: I made an official complaint to the BBC and below is their bland response, make of it what you will.
You may not read The Telegraph very often but do read this article for a big laugh before you choke on an upwelling of outrage.
The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, had the gall to say that he was taken aback at MP’s expenses and this from a guy who last year spent £4,000 of our money on a 146 mile helicopter trip. The mind boggles.
Today CND along with other Peace groups and including two Nobel Peace Prize Winners, are today blockading the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) at Aldermaston. So far I have not heard one word about this remarkable event on BBC news and there is nothing at all on the BBC web site. I find this more than just curious and I have a great deal of trouble in suppressing the thought that the BBC, as an undoubted part of the establishment, is keeping this news very, very low key.
Billions of Pounds are scheduled to be spent on ‘upgrading’ this place which for decades has seen out taxes spent on unusable, Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD’s) and we’ve heard that acronym before haven’t we? In these times of near economic collapse the time is even more right to recognise that these weapons have no place in the modern World and their only purpose is to prop up the ego’s of those in power.
It was bad enough before but the ever rising number of our troops seriously injured in Afghanistan has now reached such a horrendous pitch that our hospitals are under great pressure to cope.
The rising number of soldiers killed, three this week so far, is terrible enough and rightly deserve the, albeit somewhat muted, publicity but we hear very little about the mutilated and crippled, the blinded and the brain damaged. Not surprising that injury statistics are shrouded in mystery otherwise perhaps, just perhaps, the nation as whole might re-discover it’s spine and demand an end to this horror.
This invasion is unwinnable, will make no difference to our security and the cost in financial terms runs into tens of millions of Pounds that we cannot afford.
It’s a funny old World isn’t it?
Japan is putting in a lot of money and effort in to saving it’s giant salamanders which are being threatened by damming rivers and concrete banks to control the water supply.
Japan of course is in violation of pathetically weak regulations to protect whales and dolphins and is hell bent on hunting them to extinction. Like I said, it’s a funny old World.
So Pope Benedict in his luxurious palace in Rome has urged his Bishops in the UK to do all they can to get an opt out from proposed equality legislation and maintain their current right to ban gays from administrative positions in the Roman Catholic Church.
Oh dear! So on the one hand everyone is equal in the eyes of the Church and of God; except gays of course. It’ll be interesting to see the Bishops squirm and try to wriggle their way out of that one.
Mind you this is the successor of the same Vatican that did a deal with the Nazis to keep their position and wealth while millions were murdered. Still, they were only Jews and Gypsies and oh yes, gays.
